Illinois Modeling Users Group
The Illinois Modeling Users Group (ILMUG) was created in fall 2009 as an effort to support travel demand modeling initiatives among the small and medium sized MPOs in Illinois and is fully supported by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). ILMUG has 15 member agencies and provides a platform for Illinois MPOs to share modeling information with other MPOs, consultants, researchers, etc. in order to help develop or improve their local travel demand models.
Mission
The Illinois Model Users Group aims to promote the exchange of ideas, tips/techniques and issues involved in the use of travel demand models in Illinois. ILMUG also aims to provide educational and informational materials on new technology, specific projects and other topics of interest to the transportation/land use modeling community, and improve travel demand forecasting as part of the regional transportation planning process.
Goals
The goals of the Illinois Modeling Users Group include:
- Serve as a forum to discuss TDM activities in Illinois.
- Meet once every quarter (four times in a year).
- Assist in the maintenance and enhancement of TDM procedures to promote consistent and reliable modeling practices in Illinois.
- Serve as an organized forum to share experience and expertise in the technical areas related to travel demand modeling in Illinois.
- Serve as a peer exchange platform to discuss modeling techniques and procedures.
Organization
The Illinois Modeling Users Group meets once every quarter. The ILMUG meetings are facilitated/chaired by an ILMUG member. Attendance at the ILMUG meetings is open to people interested in transportation/land use modeling, including staff from local, regional, state and federal agencies, in addition to members of academia and consulting. No formal outreach is conducted, but participants are encouraged to inform others who may be interested in participating. The format of the meetings is informal. Sessions usually start with a couple of presentations from practitioners or developers. Presentations are followed by discussion and feedback.

- NCHRP Report 716 Travel Demand Forecasting: Parameters and Techniques
This report is an update to NCHRP Report 365: Travel Estimation Techniques for Urban Planning and provides guidelines on travel demand forecasting procedures and their application for solving common transportation problems. The report presents a range of approaches that allow users to determine the level of detail and sophistication in selecting modeling and analysis techniques most appropriate to their situations and addresses straight-forward techniques, optional use of default parameters, and appropriate references to other more sophisticated techniques. - NCHRP Report 365: Travel Estimation Techniques for Urban Planning
This report updates NCHRP Report 187, “Quick-Response Urban Travel Estimation Techniques and Transferable Paramters.” It provides a thorough review of the four-step travel demand process and transferable parameters that can be used in simple planning analyses. It will be particularly useful to planners in smaller urban areas that cannot afford to develop area-specific parameters. - Travel Model Validation and Reasonability Checking Manual (2nd Edition)
This manual focuses on both existing trip-based and emerging activity- and tour-based modeling processes. While it is impossible to specify the checks needed to validate every possible model, this manual describes families of checks and provides concrete examples of their application. - NCHRP SYNTHESIS 406: Advanced Practices in Travel Forecasting
This study explores the use of travel modeling and forecasting tools that represent significant advances over the current state of practice. The study includes five types of models: activity-based demand, dynamic network, land use, freight, and statewide. - TRB Special Report 288: Metropolitan Travel Forecasting: Current Practice and Future Direction
This report is intended for a broad audience of transportation planners, policy makers, and technical experts. It necessarily includes discussion of travel forecasting processes but at a conceptual level, using nontechnical language and explaining the meaning of technical terms that must be employed. - tfresource.org: A travel forecasting resource website
- NCHRP report 288: Metropolitan Travel Forecasting, Current Practice and Future Direction
This report highlights the fact that policy makers must have the ability to make informed decisions about future investments and public policies for the transportation system. The report recommends the steps that need to be taken to improve current and future practice in metropolitan travel forecasting. - NCHRP report 08-36, task 127: Employment Data for Planning, A Resource Guide
This report is a resource guide for selecting and using employment data for transportation travel demand modeling purposes. It explain the major differences among employment, jobs, labor force, and workers. Note, however, that this research is not a critical evaluation of vendor data. - Inside the blackbox: Making Transportation Models Work for Livable Communities
This booklet explains in simple language on the assumptions underlying the urban transportation modeling process and how it works. It also suggest improvements that can be made to correct some of the typical biases and other problems that can affect the forecasts that modeling produces. In addition, it provides tips for planner advocating for an improved travel demand model to ensure greater accuracy.
